A silver arrow is a type of projectile that appears in NetHack. It is naturally made of silver.

Generation

Silver arrows make up 3250 (1.2%) of all randomly-generated weapons. General stores, used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can sell silver arrows.

Description

Silver arrows are made for use with a bow, and are nearly identical to regular arrows, with the addition of +1d20 damage against silver-hating monsters.

Strategy

While a volley of silver arrows can tear through silver-hating monsters, they are unfortunately quite rare, making stacks of them hard to amass without using wishes. Thankfully, with maximized luck even a small stack of silver arrows can last a fairly long time.

History

The silver arrow first appears in NetHack 3.0.4. From this version to NetHack 3.4.3, including some variants based on them, silver arrows only dealt silver damage when shot from a bow of any type—this is bug C343-2, and is fixed in NetHack 3.6.0 via commit 86428dc1.

Variants

Variants with object materials will often remove the silver arrow in exchange for regular arrows possilby generating as silver.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, two stacks of silver arrows each have a 15 chance of being generated in the second alternate layout for the Castle in the narrower wing at level creation: both stacks are placed on the top and bottom squares of the barracks overlooking the drawbridge, in the same column as the bows.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the silver arrow remains a separate item from the standard arrow.

Argentum golems are generated with 19-26 uncursed silver arrows.

Orion is always generated with a quiver of 30 blessed +7 silver arrows.

The half-elf ranger of the rebel leader's party that serves as the default quest nemesis for Nobles is always generated with a quiver of blessed +1 silver arrows.

Moonbeam is a chaotic, Ranger-favoring intelligent artifact whose base item is a set of 20 silver arrows that have +1d10 to-hit and double damage bonuses—they are are permanently covered in sleep-inducing poison, and grant drain resistance while carried. Moonbeams are never lost when thrown or fired, petrify trolls (except for Olog-hai and wood trolls) and vaporize gremlins on hit, and will automatically return to the hero's quiver after being fired on a cooldown of rnz(20).

xNetHack

In xNetHack, various arrows can generate as silver, and silver arrows do not exist as a distinct item.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, various arrows can generate as silver, and silver arrows do not exist as a distinct item. This also applies to Hack'EM.
